Help & Documentation
Everything you need to install, deploy, and use the Details add-in for Autodesk® Revit®.
Getting started
- Create an account. Sign up at firmdetails.com and create or join your firm.
- Install the add-in. Download the MSI for your Revit version (2025, 2026, or 2027) from the dashboard and run it. Close all versions of Revit before installing.
- Sign in. Open Revit and find the Details tab on the ribbon. Click Settings and sign in with your account.
- Connect a detail source. Click Link and connect a container model or past project from a local drive, network path, BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or Forma, then sync it.
- Find and place details. Click Details to search your library and import drafting views into the active project or place them on sheets.
Details button — browse and import the library
The main library window. Browse every drafting view your firm has synced, organized by project, discipline, and folder.
- Search and filter by title, project, discipline, sub-discipline, or custom tab.
- Preview thumbnails before importing anything.
- Import one or more drafting views into the active project, or place them directly onto new or existing sheets using your firm's sheet template.
- Share selected details with a teammate: they receive the details inside Revit with your note, ready to import.
- Folders let you organize firm-approved details; create and manage them from the Firm Library page.
Imported drafting views stay fully native Revit elements — no exports, no external file formats.
Recs button — AI-recommended details
Recs reads the active project's context — family names, keynotes, and details already drawn — and recommends drafting views from your connected container models that complement the work in progress.
- Recommendations come only from your firm's own synced container models, never from outside content.
- Picks favor details commonly used across your firm's projects and details related to the equipment and keynotes in your model.
- A short AI overview explains the reasoning behind the batch; use Refresh for a new set.
- Import any recommendation with one click, exactly like the main library window.
AI can get things wrong — double check any recommendation before using it in documentation.
Link button — connect and sync detail sources
Manage the sources your library is built from.
- Container models: connect your firm's standard-detail container files from a local drive, network path, BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or Forma.
- Past projects: save completed projects as library sources so their details are searchable firm-wide.
- Sync parses the model locally and uploads only detail thumbnails and metadata — never the model itself.
- Re-sync any time a source changes; you control what is connected and when it syncs.
Sheet button — sheet templates and layout
Standardize how imported details land on sheets.
- Set the default sheet size and titleblock used when Details creates sheets.
- Configure naming and numbering so new sheets follow firm standards.
- Control detail placement: grid layout, spacing, and sort order. Use Apply Layout to re-flow details on existing sheets with the current settings.
- Publish templates so every user's imports follow the same standards.
Settings button — account and preferences
- Sign in / sign out of your firm account and activate your license.
- Library discipline filter: limit browsing to the disciplines your role uses (Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Power, and more).
- The installed plugin version is shown at the bottom of the window.
For BIM managers & IT
Firm-wide deployment
- The installer is a per-machine MSI, digitally signed by Firm Details LLC. One MSI per Revit version.
- Silent deployment:
msiexec /i Details-2026.msi /qn (run elevated). Suitable for SCCM, Intune, or GPO deployment.
- Install locations: Revit 2025/2026 add-ins install under
%ProgramData%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins; Revit 2027 installs under %ProgramFiles%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins per Autodesk's 2027 security requirements.
- The add-in checks for updates on startup and prompts users; updates install the same signed MSI. All versions of Revit must be closed for an update to complete.
Pre-configured container links
IT can deploy container links firm-wide so users are connected to the firm's standard-detail containers on first launch. Deployment links support environment variables (for example %USERPROFILE%) for per-user path portability. Contact support for the deployment guide.
BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud access
To let Details browse models hosted in BIM 360 or ACC, an account administrator must authorize the integration once for the account:
- Sign in to ACC / BIM 360 as an Account Admin.
- Open Account Admin → Custom Integrations (under Settings in BIM 360).
- Click Add Custom Integration, choose access to Document Management, and select "I'm the developer".
- Paste the Details client ID — shown in the add-in's ACC browser window with a copy button — and a name such as "Details".
- Save and confirm the integration shows as Active.
Users authenticate with their own Autodesk accounts (OAuth); Details only accesses projects the signed-in user already has permission to view.
Data handling & privacy
- Revit models are never uploaded. Model parsing happens locally on the user's machine.
- Details syncs only drafting-view thumbnails and metadata (titles, disciplines, project names) needed for search and display.
- Firm data is isolated per firm and encrypted in transit and at rest on Google Cloud / Firebase infrastructure (US-Central region), which maintains SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications.
- Firm administrators can permanently delete individual synced projects or wipe the firm's entire cloud library at any time.
